Yamaha A-S700 Integrated Amplifier Review

Offering a solid 90wpc into 8 ohms the Yamaha A-S700 doesn’t shirk its responsibilities when it comes to raw power. Decent loudness and slightly more than the usual set of inputs & outputs (two sets of speaker terminals, three line level inputs, a set of tape loops and a phono input for connecting a turntable) set this unit firmly in the “Solid Workhorse” category that many Yamaha products seem to end up in.

Solid is something that could also be said of the look and feel of this unit. Its front panel is an easy to fathom workmanlike affair with build quality I could be forgiven for describing as “tank like”. I cant see any knobs falling off or switches breaking on this unit regardless of the physical abuse you might put it though.

Sound wise the unit is very easy on the ears with a smooth well defined mid range,  a light touch in the top end but some would say a slight lack of punch in the bottom. One thing is for sure you are unlikely to get ear fatigue listening to this unit as its audio characteristics seem to have been designed to be tonally interesting but very easy on the ears. Not an ideal amplifier for the dance music fans amongst who require massive punch, but a fairly solid amplifier for most.

Totally on the money with your comment about the low end. I listen to a lot of techno/house music and the Yamaha A-S700 feels weak, muddy and definitely lacking in bassline punch.

    Such a shame.
