JBL ES250P 12-Inch Subwoofer

Having recently taken receipt of 3 members of the JBL ES series of speakers my initial thought was to review them as a single installation but upon thinking about it it seemed to make more sense in the long run to review each of the 3 pieces of kit as a separate enitiy therfore today Ill open with my impressions and feelings about the JBL ES250P 12-Inch Subwoofer (soon to be followed with separate thoughts on the companion pieces the JBL ES20 3-Way Bookshelf Speakers and a JBL ES25C Center Channel Speaker). The JBL ES250P was tested not only with the supplied companion pieces but also as part of the excellent Polk Audio Blackstone TL350 system which will be reviewed at some point in the near(ish) future.

The ES250P certainly looks the part, its nicely proportioned solidly built, not overly large (some manufacturers seem in a size war with subs where bigger is better) and has an overall professional look and feel. Personally I prefer my speakers with the grilles off but the JBL ES250P looks attractive with them on or removed.

Sonically the JBL ES250P keeps its professional sounding credentials, the bass is extremely deep and capable. It handled everything that was thrown at it with aplomb and always with the feeling that there was more to come if you dare to push it further. The stats for the JBL ES250P say it only handles down to 50Hz but I never got any sense that there was any sub bass missing the depth of the sub definitely helped fill up the medium sized room it was tested in. What’s more there was none of the affected ”boomyness” you get from a lot of the bang for the buck models out there that have a tendency to focus on stats and making power handling the big issue. In use in small to medium sized rooms this sub is a killer and I have no hesitation in highly recommending it to anyone in the market for a bit more bass for their setup. A quality built mid range product with sound to match.

You say it’s a 50Hz sw. Yet the stats quoted below suggest it’s response extends down to 25Hz. Which is right?

dude, the first one (50hz) refers to crossover frequency ..the last one (25hz), is the lowest frequency response ..if you set it to 50hz, the sub will sound from 25hz to 50hz ..it’s that simple
