Polk Audio Monitor 70 3-Way Floorstanding Speakers

At Hi Fi reviews we try to not sound too hypey and keep things on a somewhat even keel but let me just say that in the case of the Polk Audio Monitor 70 3-Way Floorstanding Speakers its hard. They are amazing bang for the buck and a 5 star product all the way. If you are doing an internet search to build up a picture of what you can get online in the $199 per speaker range you will find these little babys coming up again and again.

The reason for their prevalence at this price point is quite simple, they are well built, they feel like a quality product in just about every respect (and In my opinion they are lookers too) and when you plug them into a decent setup oh boy do they shine, the Monitor 70s eat up just about any audio material you care to feed them, either with or without a separate subwoofer. In fact the strong presence and definition of the bass bass end on these speakers is one of their standout points. That is not to say that they are not excellent in other regards. They have very capable uncoloured mid range and a sparkling high end overall they are balanced in tone and sound very natural. You will find that DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD audio sources sound excellent and will in many regards make you very aware of the shortcomings in some of your older (or non lossless) formats. The Monitor 70s also have feature’s such as bi amplification which to be honest you don’t expect at this kind of price.

The Polk Audio Monitor 70 3-way Floorstanding Speaker is a quality-built yet affordable, high-performance loudspeaker for music and home theater. The Polk Monitor 70 provides open, spacious and clear audio even when driven by modestly-powered amplifiers and receivers, and is voice matched for lifelike surround-sound environments. This monitor boasts a stylish look that complements today’s flat screen technology, with a sleek black finish, beefy stabilizer feet that ensure stability on carpet or hard floors, and a slim tower design that has a footprint of less than one square foot.

The Polk Monitor 70 utilizes a one-inch silk and polymer-composite dynamic-balance dome tweeter with a powerful neodymium magnet structure that delivers a clear and detailed high frequency response for realistic reproduction of vocals and instruments, as well as dual subwoofer and dual midwoofer 6.5-inch bi-laminate composite dynamic-balance drivers that are lightweight and stiff with good dampening for high efficiency, excellent bass and lower distortion. This unit’s non-resonant all-MDF enclosure construction with 0.75-inch-thick baffles, and front-to-back and side-to-side internal bracing ensures cleaner and more lifelike sound quality. The Monitor 70 features crossovers that use Mylar bypass capacitors for more detailed high frequencies, five-way binding-post connectors for more secure hook-up options and bi-wiring and bi-amping flexibility, and magnetic shielding for safe placement on or near TVs and video monitors without causing video distortion. This unit includes a critically-tuned flared port that minimizes port noise for good low-frequency extension with minimal distortion, resulting in natural, full-bodied and rich-bass sound. Built for speed, sound and value, the Polk Monitor 70 is a great introduction to high-performance sound.

I found a pair, “refurbished” from Polk for $349 a PAIR. This was in 2009 and so…being that Polk was selling them on Ebay and it was the last pair. I got ‘em.

They are black. Owning a log cabin, the cherry would have been sweet but also $250-300 more so I didn’t mind. The first thing that hit me upon delivery was that these aren’t small speakers. They are solid. They exude…that kind of “Volkswagen quality” which is of a well-built, attractive (within reason), a good price, no-frills, etc. But you do get bi-amp or bi-wire flexibility.

They need power. Sure, a twenty-watt amp will drive them but dynamic range will suffer greatly. I, having an old a/v receiver from the 90′s (an Sony 5.1, ) tried to use it but it was like driving a 15 year-old Hyundai up pikes peak. It will get there but not gracefully. Replaced it with a stereo Yamaha receiver with 125 watts. Real power. The Sony should have been rated 50 watts per channel, IMHO!

So, I’ve had them for going-on two years and here are my feelings.

Best speakers I’ve ever owned. That said, I have owned bookshelf speakers only. AR’s from 1980, Technics, KLH (forgot, one set was floor-standing), Micro-Acoustics, Sony, Bolivars and WSC’s, (the latter two both built in Tennessee and both very good speakers).

That all said, I know hi-fi and the Polk’s are the real deal. At twice the price they would be a deal. At current $200.00/ea pricing (even for cherry) they are
one of the rare, great-sounding modern components that deliver great sound at a great price. Modern or not, if I had been able to buy a pair of these in 1979 for $350.00 I would have worked all summer for it…gladly. Even then, a GOOD pair of large, quality BOOKSHELF speakers like an Advent or EPI, JBL, et. al. would have cost more and been at best no better.

When you realize that $400.00 was like $1200.00 now and the real value available now is staggering. You just have to know how to do it…and LISTEN!

    POLK MONITOR 70′s rating ****1/2
